Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg Decorating
April 5 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Pysanky are the complex-design Easter eggs that are a traditional Ukrainian craft. They are dyed eggs, with the designs built up in layers using a batik-type method. Wax pens cover each color in the design as the eggs are dipped in dyes. Local artist Kris Hazelbaker will lead an exploration into this art form.
The class will cover a little history of pysanky – the different styles and some of the meanings of the symbols. We will have an overview of the process, from bare egg to finished decorated egg – drawing the design in pencil, writing with wax over the part of the egg to be kept white, which dyes to use in which order, and finishing the egg by blowing out the inside and removing the wax writings. Then we will all have an opportunity to make our own using a simple design from a book. Kris will provide a “resources” sheet, with the sources she uses for dyes, wax pens, and pattern books.
Kris has always admired these eggs with their intricate designs, and when a friend turned out to be an expert in pysanky, she got her chance to learn the basics. “Several books and LOTS of eggs later, I am finally making pysanky eggs that I am proud of.”
